Cornerstone Statement on Song Selection

October 8, 2025
We the Session of Cornerstone Presbyterian Church believe that the hymns and songs in worship should be chosen based on the merits of the lyrics, musical excellence, and singability for the congregation.

We believe it is not a requirement for us to agree with every tenet of an author's theological views to include their music in our worship services.

The Bible and church history are full of examples where God used broken people to produce God-glorifying works
  • David was an adulterer and murderer, yet he wrote many of the Psalms;
  • Solomon multiplied wives, horses, and gold against God's explicit command (Deut. 17:16-17) and worshipped idols (1 Kings 11:4-5), but he wrote many of the Proverbs;
  • Martin Luther became increasingly antisemitic, but produced great theological works and hymns, and
  • Robert Robinson who wrote "Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing" at age 23, lapsed back into sinful ways, had periods of great spiritual instability, and even toyed with false doctrines opposed to the truth of Scripture, to name a few.

Likewise, we do not believe the beliefs or practices of a contemporary source necessarily disqualify the use of books, music, or products produced by that source.

Therefore, we will continue the practice of including worship music (contemporary and traditional) based on the merits of a song's lyrics, its musical excellence, and its singability.
