Cornerstone Staff

Pastoral Staff

Billy Haines

Senior Pastor

Biography
Pastor Billy grew up in southern Delaware, spending much of his childhood at the beach and fishing in the bay. Though he attended church regularly, it wasn’t until a youth retreat late in high school that he came to saving faith in Jesus. During the closing service of that same retreat, he also met— for the very first time—his future wife, Laura. (It was a pretty unforgettable weekend!)

He went on to attend the University of Delaware, majoring in education and getting involved with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. During those years he also discovered a wonderful church—Cornerstone—drawn in by its convicting, practical preaching and vibrant, welcoming community.

After college, Billy and Laura were married, and he began teaching eighth-grade science in a Newark public school. They served together as youth group volunteers at Cornerstone, and through experiences like this, Billy sensed the Lord calling him into vocational ministry. He began part-time studies at Westminster Seminary, preparing for whatever God had planned. In 2007 he transitioned to full-time studies at Biblical Theological Seminary and became a campus pastor with InterVarsity at the University of Delaware. He served in that position for 9 years before being called as Cornerstone's senior pastor in 2016.

Billy and Laura have three children—Ben, Elsie, and Clara—and live just south of the church in Newark. He loves being outdoors whenever he can, especially running (he ran his first marathon a few years ago!), hiking, and cheering on his kids at their various sports activities.  He is currently working on his doctorate of ministry with Reformed Theological Seminary.

David Phillips

Associate Pastor

Biography
David testifies to the LORD’s promise of being a, “faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations” (Deuteronomy 7:9). A third generation Presbyterian minister, Dave’s parents taught him to pray from the time he could talk, and he first responded to the gospel though a sermon his own dad preached on the second commandment. The Holy Spirit graciously opened David’s eyes to see not only the idols in his life which had become more important than the Creator of all things, but also to see that his good works were never good enough to satisfy a Judge who is infinite, eternal and unchangeable in His holiness. Only Jesus’ substitutionary death on the cross could put David in right standing before God the Father, without blemish and free from accusation. Having been exposed to universalism and higher critical views of Scripture at a Roman Catholic high school in Rochester, New York, Dave decided to major in Philosophy at Wheaton College (Illinois) in order to have an answer for the hope that he held. His academic advisor and spiritual mentor Mark R. Talbot introduced him to Augustine and John Owen, and also encouraged him to pursue further studies. After a few years as the Director of Family Service Ministries at the Salvation Army in Aurora, Illinois, Dave moved to the north shore of Boston to study at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. A missions class and a one year missions internship in East Asia resulted in his pursuit of Bible translation work and his marriage to a gifted linguist whom he met at church. Dave and Ginny spent 12 years ministering cross-culturally with Wycliffe Bible Translators in South Asia, with their final term in administration, where he recognized that the Lord was preparing him for pastoral ministry.

David was installed as Associate Pastor in October, 2017. He enjoys serving Cornerstone in the areas of adult Christian education, shepherding, and men’s ministry. Dave’s hobbies include reading novels with his wife Ginny, playing volleyball and disc golf, and going for walks in nature. Dave and Ginny are licensed resource parents in Chester County and desire to reflect God the Father’s adoptive love to foster children.

Zach Hayes

Student ministry associate director

Biography
Zach grew up in Wilmington, Delaware and went to Wilmington Christian School. It was in high school that he first discerned a call to ministry. He then went to Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia where he studied Business and Religion, but far more importantly it’s where he met his wife, Liz!

During college, Zach was the summer intern in his church’s youth ministry for two summers in a row and absolutely fell in love with it, which led him to work in full-time youth ministry for two years after college. As much as he loved youth ministry, Zach then spent the next five years working in the marketing industry; however, the Lord would eventually call Zach back into ministry at Cornerstone!

Zach has a passion for students and coming alongside them in one of the most important seasons of their lives. He also has a passion for studying theology as well as learning and applying God’s Word to life and to today’s culture. He also loves good coffee, Philly sports (go birds), being with friends and family, watching movies, playing music, reading books, traveling, trying new restaurants, and spending time with Liz and their dog, Cooper.

Uriah Stock

Becca Kendzierski

Jen Smith

Carolyn Quesenberry

Music Director

Biography
Life verses:  Ezekiel 36:26, Isaiah 26:3

Music has always been a part of Uriah’s life. Growing up in a musical family, he began playing piano, guitar, and singing at a young age. A longtime member of Cornerstone PCA, he has been part of our church community for over 20 years—participating in youth group, singing in the choir, and eventually leading worship. It was at Cornerstone where he met his wife, Rachel.

While studying at the University of Delaware and attending InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, Uriah developed a deeper love for worship and sensed a growing call to lead. Around that time, he officially joined Cornerstone’s praise team. He has now served on the team for over 18 years, building deep friendships and finding a strong sense of family among his fellow team members. Uriah is passionate about worshiping with the body of Christ—both at Cornerstone and in fellowship with believers from other local churches.

Outside of church, Uriah works as an engineer at W. L. Gore & Associates. Whenever possible, he loves spending time with Rachel, their two wonderful kids, and their extended family and close friends. He also enjoys jiu-jitsu, cooking, woodworking, fishing, listening to music, and beach days with his family.

Yes, there are a couple people that look alike on the music and AV team… sometimes he will answer when being called Jaimie… or Brian…  it’s happened once or twice.

 Women's Ministry Director

Biography
I grew up in a small town in Pennsylvania, where my parents introduced me to Jesus at an early age. I first understood the gospel and my need for it when I was seven years old. As a teenager, I was active in a wonderful youth group at my church, where I stayed involved in many ministries and continued to grow in my faith and understanding of God’s Word.

After high school, knowing I had an empathy for people, I attended a four-year Bible college where I earned a B.S. in Biblical Theology and a second B.S. in Counseling. After college, I moved from my small town to take a job as a foster care social worker in inner-city Philadelphia. For the next decade, I worked in social services in and around Philadelphia and Wilmington, Delaware.

During that time, I was involved in my local church—leading music, organizing events for young adults, and facilitating women’s Bible studies and small groups. In 2008, I married my husband, Randy, whom I met at church in 2004, and God has since given us two lovely daughters, born in 2013 and 2018.

Since becoming a mom, I’ve devoted my love and energy to being at home with our girls and serving in the churches we’ve attended as a women’s Bible study leader, diaconal associate, and event planner. God brought our family to Cornerstone in early 2024, and we immediately felt at home, knowing this was the church we had been praying for.

In my free time, I love planning (or going on!) my next adventure. I enjoy traveling to experience new places, taking in God’s beautiful creation, and SCUBA diving in the oceans of the world. When I’m home, you’ll usually find me reading and snuggling with my kids. I also really enjoy conversation that goes below the surface, all things music (singing and listening), a really good sunset, the ocean, and quality time with the people I love.

My favorite verse is Isaiah 40:31, which reminds me that God gives His children the perseverance to face life’s many challenges and griefs. Another verse I try to live by is one my dad often repeated to me, Matthew 10:16. It encourages me to use wisdom while remaining gentle and harmless as I navigate life’s relationships and difficulties.

 Children’s Ministry Director

She also met her husband, Kevin, at UD. After graduation, she attended Penn State University and earned a Masters of Education in Secondary School Counseling. She worked as a guidance counselor at Kennett High School until their first child, Maddie was born.  Since that point, she has been a stay at home, homeschooling mom to four wonderful children: Maddie, Marshall, Morgan, and Mitchell.

Jen and her family have been attending Cornerstone since the fall of 2013. She loves Christ’s church and ministering to the families at Cornerstone. She’s also a huge fan of all things Pittsburgh, especially the Pirates!

She feels blessed to have grown up in a Christian family and does not know a time that she didn’t know Jesus.

Carolyn has always had a passion for children and peoples with special needs. When she first graduated college, Carolyn worked for Children and Youth Services in their foster care and child abuse investigation departments. Once she had children, Carolyn began substitute teaching and worked for local public and private schools. More recently, Carolyn worked as the Administrative Assistant for Landenberg Christian Academy where she learned the mechanics of administering a school. Cornerstone hired her in 2020 to be their Preschool Director. Carolyn loves spending time with her husband and four children, two of which have been recently married. In her spare time Carolyn enjoys coaching competitive gymnastics.

Hannah Detweiler

Biography
I grew up in a silly loving home in Newark, DE where we loved Jesus and we were always at church. Growing up in youth group had a huge part in building my love for God and finding my faith as a teenager to make me who I am today. Feeling as though God was calling me in the direction of caring for children, I began volunteering in nursery and babysitting as a teenager. That love for caring for children has a special place in my heart and continued into adulthood. In 2015 I married my husband Paul and now I have the joy of caring for our 3 beautiful children, Naomi (4), Pauly (2), and Eli (1). We have been attending cornerstone since 2017, and am so thankful for the love our family has been shown since we walked through the doors.

They were married in 2010 and were a part of a church plant there before moving to Southern Chester County in 2013. Together they have three amazing daughters. Over the years, Jaimie has volunteered with sound and lighting at five different churches as well as helping form community groups and church organization before volunteering at Cornerstone and eventually joining staff. His professional background is in electrical estimating, construction, and sales. Currently, he works at a local electrical company as the head electrical estimator. Jaimie enjoys woodworking, playing music, and being outdoors. His kids say he’s funny and nice. Jaimie has slowly been implementing his plan to take over the church, which pastor Billy knows nothing about.

Ralph Jarrell

Elder, Groundskeeper

Biography
Ralph was born and raised in Newark, Delaware. His family went to church frequently, but they never really spoke about God at home.  When he was in elementary school they started attending a church where the gospel was preached.  When Ralph was eight years old, he heard the gospel in a way that he understood and he believed it. Ralph prayed with one of the Sunday school teachers that day.  Since that time, God has drawn him closer to himself.

When Ralph entered fifth grade, his parents began sending him to Christian school. He is thankful for the eight years of Christian education that he received.  When he graduated from high school, he decided to attend the University of Delaware. While at UD, he got involved with Intervarsity Christian Fellowship. It was during these years where he was challenged in his faith and he grew more deeply in his relationship with Christ.

After college, Ralph was very involved with Young Life, an outreach mission to unchurched high school students.  It was there that he met his wife, Danica, while leading together at the same school. They have been married for 23 years.  God has blessed them with three children, Annabelle, Gavin, and Emma.

He is fortunate to work in a career that he loves. After college, he worked in the banking industry for 13 years. As he advanced in his career, he became more and more dissatisfied with what he was doing and has switched careers. He has now been teaching high school mathematics at Wilmington Christian School for 20 years.

Laura Scott

Administrative Assistant

Biography
I was raised in a Christian home in Delaware County, PA. My parents love the Lord and tried their best to instill their faith and values in me, but when I was 18 I walked away from God, the church, and my family. I spent 8 years running away as far as I could, but in August 2007, at 26 years old, God drew me back to Him, and I gave my life to Christ at an outdoor service at Calvary Chapel Delaware County. My life radically changed after that day, but at the same time it’s been a slow process of sanctification and I’m trusting the Lord that He is continuing to work in my life to make me more like Jesus.

In December of 2008, I met my husband, Rich, at a game night with friends from Calvary Chapel. Rich and I were married 3 years later in November of 2011 and attended City Church of Wilmington (PCA) for the first 6 years of our marriage. Rich and I had our first child, Julia, in February 2015. We’ve been attending Cornerstone since August of 2018 after feeling led by the Lord to look for a new church. Our son, Nolan, was born in February 2019, and we felt so much love from our new church family during my difficult pregnancy and a scary episode at A.I. Dupont when Nolan was 3 days old. To say Cornerstone is a gift is not doing justice to how wonderful it is to be a part of this community, but it truly does feel like a gift from God to be here.

I’ve been a stay at home mom since Julia was 10 months old. I started homeschooling Julia in kindergarten, and although it wasn’t my plan to homeschool, I have come to see the blessings of having her at home with me. I’m thankful for grandparents who are helping with homeschooling while I work part time as an Administrative Assistant at church. I love this job, and it is a blessing to serve the Lord in this way.

I also serve as a Life Group Leader and a Greeter. My husband serves as a Life Group Leader, and you’ll see him on the stage playing on the worship team.

Jay Gallagher

Deacon, Property Manager

Biography
Jay was raised in a Christian home were Christian values were modeled daily; however, he did not make a formal declaration of faith until he was 15. He is the youngest of five children and had aspirations to be a carpenter like his father, but knew that his mother wanted him to attend college and that, along with the encouragement of his siblings, spurred him on to attend Geneva College in Beavers Falls, PA, just across the river from New Brighton, PA, where he grew up. Jay graduated in 1983 with a degree in business administration, and then moved to the Rochester, NY, area were he met his wife Barbara and was married in 1985.

After a serious injury at work and the encouragement of his wife, Jay and Barbara relocated back to the Beaver Falls area so that Jay could attend Community College of Beaver County in pursuit of a professional pilot career. This career choice brought a series of relocations which eventually brought him and his family to Newark, Delaware. He is a retired captain from NetJets Aviation. Because of this unique schedule Jay and his wife have been able to actively pursue bicycling riding, as well has some long term renovation projects including flipping a house in 2017. Another benefit of Jay’s schedule is that he and his wife are able to travel to spend time with their large extended family including three adult children (and two daughters-in-law) living in Orlando, FL; Long Island, NY; and Newark, DE.

“but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.” Isaiah 40:31

Julia Reynolds

Gardener/Custodian

Biography
Julia would rather be planting flowers and working outside than writing a bio. She’s held jobs ranging from teaching basket weaving in the Rocky Mountains, teaching Pre-Calculus in Ohio, writing statistical software at DuPont, to teaching her three children to read. She loves this new variety of work with a great staff and a church that has meant so much to their family in the 3 1/2 years they’ve attended. Julia lived for 25 years in Cincinnati, Ohio. She grew up in a supportive, fun family who enjoyed spending time together and was blessed with committed, loving, wise, and a little crazy church youth group and YoungLife leaders.  She met her husband, Brad, at a small Christian college in Indiana and moved to Delaware in 2001. The only thing that would make living in this corner of the east coast more perfect is being closer to extended family. Thankfully, Brad is a teacher and together with their 3 kids, they have summers available to travel and spend time with family. God’s faithfulness truly is great (she sings to the kids who will still let her) and as she was just reminded and needs to be reminded daily, Jesus is the Good Shepherd who has torn the veil that separated us from him and he hears our prayers. “For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to RECONCILE to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making PEACE by the blood of his cross. And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you HOLY and BLAMELESS and above reproach before him…” Colossians 1: 19-22
