The Problem of Spiritual Immaturity

1 Corinthians 3:1-23 | Sermon Resources | 2 November 2025

Summary

In our passage this week Paul calls out the Corinthians for their lack of real spiritual growth.  They are still living on “milk” instead of “solid food.” He reminds the church that only God gives growth, warns against false progress built on worldly wisdom, and calls believers to build their lives on Christ alone. The goal isn’t independence from God but greater dependence on his grace—the only path to lasting growth and faithfulness.

Discussion Questions

Note for leaders: Don’t use all off these questions! Choose the one that will work for your group.

1. Personal Assessment

  • Where do you see signs of spiritual growth in your own life right now?
  • In what areas do you feel “stuck” or spiritually immature?
  • When was a time you realized you were still on “milk” rather than “solid food”? What caused that realization?

2. Spiritual Habits and Practices

  • What spiritual habits (Scripture, prayer, worship, community) most help you grow right now?
  • What habits or distractions most stunt your growth?
  • How can you build rhythms that help you feed on “solid food” instead of just surviving on “milk”?

3. Dependence vs. Independence

  • What does it look like for you to depend on God rather than yourself in your spiritual life?
  • In what ways are you tempted to believe spiritual maturity means becoming more self-sufficient?
  • How does grace—not willpower—change the way you approach growth?

4. Building on the Right Foundation

  • What “materials” are you building with in your life right now—gold and silver, or wood and straw?
  • What are some “quick fixes” or “easy answers” you’ve relied on that haven’t led to true growth?
  • What helps you keep Jesus, not human wisdom or success, as the foundation of your life?

5. Community and Accountability

  • How can we as a church help one another grow past spiritual adolescence?
  • Who in your life challenges you toward deeper maturity—and how can you invite that accountability more intentionally?
  • What would it look like for our Life Group to measure maturity by dependence on Christ instead of performance?

6. Looking Forward

  • What is one step of obedience or faith you sense God calling you to take this week?
  • How can you practically “pursue solid food” in the coming month?
  • How will you remind yourself that “healthy things grow”—and that growth always comes by God’s grace?
