I Am the Way, the Truth, the Life

John 14:1-11 | Sermon Resources | 22 June 2025

Summary

Perhaps no line spoken by Jesus has proven more contentious than that found in John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”  More than even Jesus’ bold and frequent claims to divinity, this claim to be the only way to the Father, has stirred up much division through the ages.  And yet, as we examine the original context, we see that Jesus makes this claim to instill comfort and confidence in his followers.

Quotes

“The waitress brings us menus, chunky tablets that would make Moses proud. Then it dawns on me: God is to religion as food is to a menu. Both the menu and the religion suggest a variety of options, and while the waiter can make recommendations, ultimately the choice is ours. To say you know God because you are religious is like saying you have dined well because you read the menu.” (Man Seeks God: My Flirtations with the Divine, Eric Weiner, p. 339)
