John 8:12-20 | Sermon Resources | 25 May 2025
Summary
Last week Pastor Billy preached from John 6 on Christ being the bread of life, true nourishment for our souls, giving us new affections which drive out or expel the love of sin from our hearts, like water displacing air in a beaker. And today we hear Jesus’ claim to be the light of the world. But it is possible to think we are pursuing light when in fact we are groping about in deep darkness, deceived by the enemy. The Bible says that Satan “disguises himself as an angel of light” (2 Corinthians 11:14). We will look at some of our enemy’s tools to deceive us, but we will also see how Jesus was not afraid to take his light into some very dark places, and we will see his deep desire to light our own paths as we follow him.

- Pastor Dave mentioned 3 biblical stories where appearances were deceiving – Balaam beating his donkey, Paul persecuting Christians, and Elisha’s servant fearing the chariots and horses of the Syrians. What were they missing?
- How did fear and pride blind the Pharisees to seeing Jesus as the light? Can you prayerfully think of ways where pride or fear may be blinding you?
- Pastor Dave said that when you follow Jesus, He is going to take you places you would never venture on your own. Do you have any examples from your own life?
- How will you follow the light this week where you live, work, and play?
