Waterless Springs

2 Peter 2:10-22 | Sermon Resources | 13 April 2025

Sermon Summary

Some threats to our faith are as obvious as roaring lions but other threats are harder to spot.  Peter places false teachers in the latter category.  They are waterless springs, he says, offering life but unable to actually deliver.  In the sermon this week Pastor Billy explores the false promises of these false teachers.

Discussion Questions

  1. Peter describes false teachers as “waterless springs” and “mists driven by a storm.”  Jesus describes them wolves in sheep’s clothing (Mt 7:15).  What do you think these analogies are meant to teach us about false teachers?
  2. Even if these false teachers can be initially hard to spot, their conduct is pretty obvious.  Looking at Peter’s description in verses 10-16, what most stands out to you?  Are any of these things taking place in the church today?
  3. False teachers promise freedom (v.19).  What do you think is the difference between the freedom they offer and the freedom Jesus offers?
  4. What promises of freedom might false teachers today offer?
  5. What does it means to be “slaves of corruption” (v.19)? What encouragement would you give to someone who feels as if they are enslaved to sin?
  6. How can we guard ourselves against the dangers Peter is alerting us to in this passage?
  7. How should we understand Peter’s statement in verses 20-22.  Is he teaching that true Christians can actually lose their salvation?
  8. What most encouraged you or challenged you as we studied the passage today?
