2 Peter 3:1-13 | Sermon Resources | 27 April 2025
Sermon Summary
We all face disappointment at various seasons in our lives. But when that disappointment is left unaddressed, it can sometimes turn into disillusionment, and if we are not careful, we can find ourselves showing contempt toward God. In our passage this week Peter addresses a group of people who have done just that: scoffers.
Discussion Questions
- There are many examples in the Psalms of “raw” prayers offered up to God questioning why he seems silent, far off, and uninvolved (i.e. Psalm 13). What is the difference between those prayers and the cries of the scoffer (v.4)?
- Are there areas in your life where you have doubted God’s promises and perhaps become like scoffer Peter writes about here?
- According to verses 1 & 2 what is the purpose for which Peter has written this letter? Why is it that we need to be “stirred up?” Is there any specific area of your life where you most need to be stirred up?
- How does Peter respond to the scoffers’ claim that everything continues as it has from the beginning (v.4-7)?
- How do you respond personally to the idea that God is “not slow… but patient” (v.9)? Does that change your perspective on seemingly unanswered prayers or unfulfilled promises?
- Are there areas in your life where you’ve doubted God’s promises because of delays? How does this passage encourage you to stay faithful?
- How does this passage encourage or challenge your view of eternity and God’s final judgment?
- In verse 11, Peter asks, “What kind of people ought you to be?” How would you answer that based on the passage?
- What has most encouraged or challenged you in our study of the passage today?
