Sermon Summary

In his second letter, Peter is deeply concerned with the internal threat presented by false teachers. These are corrupt leaders, who believe a fake gospel, that could divide or destroy good churches. Therefore, it’s important that Christians know the true gospel so they can smell the counterfeits when they arise. While the danger of false teaching is real, Peter is confident that God will deliver his people from false teachers with justice. This is the substance of this week’s sermon.

Discussion Questions

  1. New Testament writers often warn about the dangers of false teaching, but Peter seems more concerned about the teachers themselves. From vs. 1-3, what character flaws do we find in these false teachers?
  2. Peter uses the word “destructive” to describe the impact that these teachers have (v. 1). How have you seen corrupt leaders be destructive in the church? What happened as a result?
  3. If someone asked you to share the gospel with them, how would you explain it? Do you feel “prepared to give an answer” for your faith in Jesus (1 Peter 3:15)? How might you want to grow in this area?
  4. What false teachings could we encounter in the church today? Discuss an example or two. How does the true gospel speak to those false teachings?
  5. Some believe that God behaves too differently between the Old Testament and the New Testament. Reading through vs. 4-9 again, how does Peter demonstrate that God is the same yesterday, today, and forever?
  6. Peter wants to encourage us by showing that God will judge the false teachers for their behavior (v. 9). How is it possible for judgment to be good news?
  7. When was a time that you saw God bring justice to bear in an unjust situation? How did that encourage you in your faith? How can justice inspire us to trust Jesus more?
  8. Did anything else encourage or challenge you as we studied the passage today?
