2 Peter 1:12-21 | Sermon Resources | 30 March 2025
Sermon Summary
Throughout his second letter, Peter is raising the bar of Christian experience – calling us to a fresh encounter of God’s divine power and to a life of faithfulness and fruitfulness. All of this is beyond the reach of our “natural” human existence. To enjoy the life that Peter is describing we need to be reminded again of the new birth we have in Christ. This is the substance of this week’s sermon.
Discussion Questions
- Peter is writing to a group of Christians who “know” and are “established” in the Christian life (v.12), and yet he is concerned about them. What is the concern that Peter has for them (v.13-15)?
- Spiritual forgetfulness is a common problem in the Bible. Why do you think this is? How has this been a problem in your own life?
- In seeking to “stir up” his flock, Peter shares part of his personal testimony (v.16-18). Of all the different experiences he had with Jesus, why do you think Peter chose to reflect on the transfiguration?
- What do you think Peter’s mountain top experience (v.16-18) would have produced in him? How would that divine encounter have changed his life?
- Peter uses his mountaintop experience to invite his readers into something similar (v.19-21). Unpack the imagery found in verse 19. What is Peter saying? In what ways have you experienced what is described here?
- The promise of the day dawning and the morning star rising in our hearts comes from paying attention to God’s Word. How can we “pay attention” to the Bible the way that Peter writes here?
- What else do we learn in this passage about the nature, sufficiency, and authority of Scripture?
- What most encouraged or challenged you as we studied the passage today?
