The Danger of Fruitless Faith

2 Peter 1:5-15 | Sermon Resources | 23 March 2025

Summary

Does God primarily want us to be faithful or to be fruitful?  In the sermon this week Pastor Billy explains that this is a false dilemma – we do not need to choose between being faithful to Jesus and being fruitful for Jesus.  One leads to the other.  In our passage, Peter invites Christians to experience again the “divine power” given to us in Christ and to live the abundant, fruitful life.

Discussion Questions

  1. Discuss the idea of being faithful versus being fruitful. What does the Bible say about each? Why do we sometimes pit these two ideas against each other?
  2. Peter warns us of the danger of becoming “ineffective and unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.” What exactly do you think Peter means by this? Paint a picture (with words!) of what ineffective and unfruitful Christianity looks like.
  3. According to this passage (and other passages of Scripture if you would like), what causes us to become unfruitful in our faith? Which of these causes are you most susceptible to?  How so?
  4. When Peter begins this section with “for this very reason,” what is he referring to? In other words, how does the promise of last week’s passage connect with the call to action of this week’s passage?
  5. Look carefully at the call to action in verses 5 to 8. What stands out to you? What role do we play in pursuing these qualities? Which of these qualities would you most like to grow in?
  6. What promises are found in verses 10 and 11? What do you think Peter was trying to stir up in his readers by recounting these promises?
  7. What did you find most challenging or encouraging from our time studying this passage today?
