Stand Firm

1 Peter 5:8-14 | Sermon Resources | 2 March 2025

Sermon Summary

As Peter concludes his letter he reminds us that the devil is real, that the Christian life is a battle, and that we need to, therefore, stand firm in the victory that Jesus already secured for us.

Discussion Questions

  1. CS Lewis says we can either make too much or too little of the devil. What is the danger of each? Which error do you tend to make? How so?
  2. Peter compares the devil to a “roaring lion.” How does this image help us to understand spiritual warfare?
  3. What does it mean to be “sober-minded” and “watchful”? What do you think we are supposed to be looking for?
  4. Verse 9 calls us to “resist” the devil by standing firm in the faith. What are some practical ways to do this?
  5. How does knowing the battle with the devil is only temporary (v.10) and that Jesus still has all dominion (v.11) encourage you to engage in the battle?
  6. Peter exhorts us to stand firm in the grace of God (v.12). Where in your life right now do you most feel the need to stand firm?
  7. What has most encouraged you or challenged you from our time studying this passage?
