Delighting in God’s Ways

1 Peter 2:11-20 | Sermon Resources | 3 November 2024

Sermon Summary

This coming Tuesday is Election Day!  This election season has been quite divisive for the country and somewhat exhausting for many individuals.  Besides simply being wearied by it all, how should Christians respond to all that is going on in the world today? Preaching from 1 Peter 2:11-20, Pastor Billy explores the posture that believers ought to have towards the world.  We will hear the apostle Peter’s call to the church to neither assimilate nor isolate but to participate-to participate in in the world by doing good so that others would come to “glorify God.”

Discussion Questions

1. What was your biggest takeaway from the sermon this week?

2. In the sermon, Pastor Billy identified some unhelpful postures towards the world that we can fall into:

  • Attack
  • Assimilate
  • Isolate

Spend some time briefly summarizing each posture. What might possibly be good about each one? Where does each fall short? Which posture is the greatest temptation for you?  How so?

3. How does knowing we are “sojourners and exiles” provide a foundation for us to relate to the world? What is the danger of forgetting this aspect of our identity?

4. What “passions of the flesh” might have been a temptation for Peter’s original audience knowing they were “being grieved by various trials” (c.f. 1 Peter 1:6)?  In what way can you relate?

5. What parts of this passage might a modern audience find surprising? How so?

6. What is the significance of the statement “for the Lord’s sake” in verse 13?

7. Of all the places in this passage that Peter calls us to do good, which one is most challenging for you? Share the verse and explain how it is challenging, convicting, or encouraging for you.

8. In the sermon Pastor Billy laid out 3 principles for engaging the world:

  • Make sure you are fighting the right battle.
  • Remember where your true allegiance lies.
  • Do good!

Which one do you most need to put into practice this week?
