The Servant of the LORD: Bringer of Justice

Isaiah 42:1-4 | Sermon Resources | 4 August 2024

Sermon Summary

Pretend we’re sitting in a Sunday School classroom. The instructor is at the white board and says, “Let’s brainstorm words that we would use to describe Jesus to others. What words would you use to describe him?” The teacher holds their Expo marker up to the board ready for answers. “Lord,” says one voice. “Savior,” says another. Before long, words like “friend,” “mediator,” “Word,” “king,” “messiah,” fill the board. How long do you think it would be before the word “servant” appeared? At first glance, the word seems beneath Jesus: he is no lowly servant. And yet, this is one of the primary ways Jesus described his own ministry (Mark 10:45). And this term is central to the way Isaiah tells us about the Messiah who would come. Over the next four weeks at Cornerstone Church, we will be looking at the four “Servant Songs” from the book of Isaiah (42:1-4; 49:1-7; 50:4-9, 52:13-53:12). My prayer for us is that, as we look at Jesus from the perspective of Isaiah, we will gain a fuller and more vivid picture of what Jesus of Nazareth was all about. And having seen Jesus, the Servant of the LORD, with greater clarity, we will better understand our own calling to live as Jesus’ servant people in our homes, classrooms, jobs, and neighborhoods.
