Discussion Questions
1. What was your biggest takeaway from the sermon this week?
2. Why is it important to keep our lives “free from the love of money?” Spend some time looking up other passages in the Bible that speak to this issue. Do you notice any common themes?
3. In what way is materialism (i.e. the love of money) part of the “air we breathe” in our culture? In what way has materialism been a distraction in your life?
4. Would you describe yourself as a mostly content person? Why or why not?
5. What positive things might you begin to see in your life if you were able to grow in contentment?
6. In the sermon Pastor Billy named 4 signs someone is growing in contentment:
- You are able to enjoy the material blessings you have.
- You are thankful for the material blessings others have.
- You are generous with all that you have.
- You prioritize kindness over fairness.
In which of these areas would you most like to grow? What do you think that growth would look like? How does this passage encourage you to make those changes?
7. How might believing the promises in verses 5b and 6 set us free from the love of money and actually produce contentment?
8. In what areas of your life do you most need to believe these promises?
9. In the sermon Pastor Billy related Jesus’ cleansing of the temple to how Jesus cleanses us as individuals. (Thankfully Jesus doesn’t always use a whip on us!) How does this illustration keep us from thinking we can cleanse ourselves in our own strength?
