Sermon Summary

Pastor Billy continues our Hebrews sermon series coming this week to Hebrews 8:1-13.  In the sermon he focuses on the God-initiated, hope-producing, soul-satisfying promises of God.

Discussion Questions

  1. What does this passage reveal to us about Jesus being our high priest?  What is the significance of Jesus being our priest?
  2. What is the significance of Jesus seated (as opposed to standing) at the right hand of God?
  3. In the sermon Pastor Billy presented the idea of the “n-shaped” versus the “u-shaped” life.  Explain what this is.  What does this have to do with the promises of God?  How can we grow in taking on a “u-shaped” posture of our life?
  4. Verses 8-12 are quoted from the prophet Jeremiah who was writing during a time of exile.  How might the promises in these verses have produced hope for Jeremiah’s audience?  How do they give us hope today?
  5. In the sermon Pastor Billy said we need to have one eye on our present circumstances and one eye on the promises of God in order to see correctly.
    • What is the danger of only seeing our present circumstances?  In what ways do you fall into this trap?
    • What is the danger of only seeing God’s promise (detached from our present reality)?
      How can we do both?
  6. Pastor Billy explored 3 aspects of God’s promises in this sermon this week:
    • God-initiated
    • Hope-producing
    • Soul-satisfying
Which of these points was most encouraging to you? How so?  Which was most challenging?  How so?
  7. In what area of your life would you most like to grow in trusting the promises of God?
  8. What might be the long-term fruit of trusting God’s promises in that area?
  9. Thinking about one person from your life outside of church, what is one thought or idea from this week’s sermon you could share with them to encourage them?
