The Danger of Falling Away

Hebrews 3:7-19 | Sermon Resources | 22 October 2023

Sermon Summary

Pastor Billy comes to the second “warning” passage in Hebrews this week. We will look at the danger of falling away, the reason behind it, and the help we have.

Discussion Questions

  1. What is it that makes this danger of falling away from the living God such a sobering issue to consider?
  2. Why do you think it is important for us to dwell on the fact (and even sing about) our hearts being prone to wander away from God?
  3. Does falling away from the living God mean losing your salvation? What other Scripture could we look at to be assured we can’t ultimately lose our salvation?
  4. In our passage the author quotes Psalm 95 which explains how the Israelites, despite hearing the voice of God, hardened their hearts. Where primarily do we hear the voice of God today? In what ways do we harden our hearts against his voice?
  5. In the sermon, Pastor Billy asked us to consider whether God’s Word (i.e. the Bible) is “enough” for us. What does this question mean? In what ways does this question challenge you?
  6. The primary call to action from our passage is to “exhort one another every day.” Do you have the kind of relationships in your life where you are exhorting others and being exhorted? What might need to happen to develop those kinds of relationships? How can we do that here at this group?
  7. Have someone read Hebrews 12:1-2. How does the fact that Jesus is called the “founder and perfecter” of our faith encourage you in regards to falling away from the living God?
  8. If appropriate, spend some time at the end of the discussion praying for yourselves and for those you know who appear to have fallen away. Use caution if you pray by name for anyone.
