Jesus Our Deliverer

Hebrews 2:5-18 | Sermon Resources | 8 October 2023

Summary

In the sermon this week Pastor Billy focuses on what it means that Jesus is our deliverer.  We will consider our need for deliverance, the means of our deliverance, and finally the effect of our deliverance.

Discussion Questions

  1. Our passage this week addresses the issue of death. Why do you think death fills us with so much fear?
  2. In the sermon Pastor Billy presented 3 unhelpful postures the world takes to death:
    • Ignoring death
    • Solving death
    • Rationalizing death
Which of these most hits home for you? How so? Are there other unhelpful postures we take towards the idea of death?
  3. Verses 8 and 9 contrast what we do not see and what we do see. Explain what these verses mean.  Why is it often easier for us to see the brokenness of the world rather than to see Jesus? Where in your life do you need “to see” Jesus? What does that mean?
  4. Explain what is meant by the n-shaped life versus the u-shaped life (see figure below). How do we see the “u-shape” dynamic at play in our passage? Can you think of any examples in your life of where you are living out the “n-shaped” dynamic rather than the “u-shaped” dynamic?
  5. In what sense does this passage present our deliverance as an accomplished fact? In what sense does this passage present our deliverance as a continuing process?
  6. Of all the truths presented in this passage (and the sermon) what do you find most encouraging?  What do you find most challenging?
  7. What is one thing you will do as a result of studying this passage?
