Marriage (Part One)

Genesis 2:18-25 | Sermon Resources | 11 June 2023

Sermon Summary

Pastor Billy continues in our Genesis sermon series coming this week to Genesis 2:18-25 where we see the first ever wedding. This week we will focus on the “birds-eye view” of the passage and see that marriage is ultimately God’s idea.

Discussion Questions

  1. What has informed and shaped your view of marriage up to this point in your life (your family, friends, media, church, Scripture)? What impact does this have on your attitude, thoughts, feelings toward marriage today?
  2. As you read the passage (and remember Pastor Billy’s sermon) what was the most surprising or impactful idea about marriage that struck you? How so?
  3. Explain what you think it means (and perhaps doesn’t mean) that Eve was made to be a “helper fit” for Adam? Does this mean women were designed by God to be inferior to men?
  4. What is the significance of Adam’s exclamation in verse 23? For those who are married, what kinds of things help to maintain joy and delight within your marriage? What encouragement would you give someone who is not experiencing joy within their marriage?
  5. What do verses 24 and 25 tell us about the nature of what marriage is all about?
  6. For married couples:
    • What could you do to make your marriage a safer place to be open and honest with each other?
    • What might foster the ability to be completely vulnerable with your spouse?
    • What obstacles keep us from being vulnerable with our spouse?
  7. What is one thing you will do as a result of studying this passage?

Quotes

“The woman was made of a rib out of the side of Adam; not made out of his head to rule over him, nor out of his feet to be trampled upon by him, but out of his side to be equal with him, under his arm to be protected, and near his heart to be beloved.”

– Matthew Henry
