Did God Really Say…?

Genesis 3:1-7 | Sermon Resources | 2 July 2023

Summary

Pastor Billy continues in our Genesis sermon series coming this week to Genesis 3:1-7 and the introduction of the serpent into the perfect world of Eden. We will explore 3 aspects of the strategy that the serpent employed against Eve to entice her to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

Discussion Questions

  1. For those who grew up in the church (and maybe even for those who did not) this is likely a familiar passage. Was there anything that stuck out to you afresh as you read the passage and listened to the sermon?
  2. In what way did the serpent question the sensibility of God’s word? Why is this such an effective strategy?
  3. How do you think we should respond as Christians to those who mock God today (i.e. question the sensibility of God’s word)? Is it ever appropriate to respond to their mocking with mocking of our own?
  4. In what way did the serpent question the truthfulness of God’s word?
  5. How would you respond to someone who says, “Well that’s just your interpretation of the Bible. You have your interpretation and I have my interpretation.”? What principles would you use tease apart an “interpretation” from the “truth”?
  6. In what way did the serpent question the goodness of God’s word?
  7. In what situations are you tempted to question the goodness of God? How can affirming the goodness of God be a powerful tool in fighting temptation?
  8. What is the significance of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil?
  9. What other questions does this passage raise for you?
  10. How does Jesus, our “second Adam,” do what the first Adam failed to do?
