Majesty! Mystery! Meaning!

Genesis 1:1-2 | Sermon Resources | 23 April 2023

Summary

Pastor Billy kicks off a new sermon series this week out of the book of Genesis. We will consider the majesty, mystery, and meaning revealed in the famous first lines – in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

Discussion Questions

NOTE: There are lots of questions this week. Choose the ones that would be most helpful for your group to discuss.

  1. Read Genesis 1:1-2. Make a written list of all the things we learn from these first 2 verses. NOTE TO LEADERS: Really consider writing these things down even if it’s just in a notebook. Keep pressing your group until you have at least a dozen items on your list.
  2. Which of these truths most stirs your heart? How so?
  3. Which of these truths do you have the hardest time understanding? Why is that?
  4. Which of these truths do you think the typical non-Christian would have the hardest time accepting?
  5. Read Colossians 2:8. What “empty deceit” might we be tempted to believe about the creation of the world?
  6. We believe God created the heavens and the earth ex nihilo, out of nothing. How is this idea presented to us in this passage?
  7. In the sermon Pastor Billy made the case that creation is ultimately “unnecessary” in that God did not have to create the world because he was, for instance, bored or lonely. In what sense is it true that creation is “unnecessary”? Do you agree? Why or why not?
  8. What do you think the phrase “without form and void” means? What does this tell us about the power of God to bring creation about?
  9. In the sermon Pastor Billy explored the (1) majesty, (2) mystery, and (3) meaning found in these opening verses of Genesis. Spend some time discussing each point. Where do you see majesty in these verses? Mystery? Meaning?
  10. Read Psalm 104:1-9. How does the psalmist respond to God revealed as our Creator? How can this be our response as well?
