Isaiah 8:21-9:7 | Sermon Resources | 18 December 2022

Sermon Summary

Pastor Billy concludes our Advent series this week coming to Isaiah 8:21-9:7. The sermon will focus on the disruptive mercy of God which breaks into self-created darkness.

Discussion Questions

  1. What most struck you in the sermon this week?
  2. Isaiah says (v.21&22) that the people who were in great distress looked “to the earth.”  What does this mean?  In what ways to people today “look to the earth” for help?  How are you tempted to do the same?
  3. Do you agree that it is easier for us to connect with the darkness of the world rather than the mercy of God?  Why might it be easier to connect with darkness?
  4. Look at all the promises that are made in chapter 9 – no more gloom, light, joy, peace, victory, justice, righteousness.  Which of these promises would you most like to press into this week?  What would it look like to really rest in that promise?
  5. What do we learn in verse 6 & 7 about the identity of the child to be born?  What insight does this give us into the purpose for which Jesus came?
  6. What is one thing you will do as a result of studying this passage?
