The Certainty of God’s Judgment

Ephesians 5:5-8a | Sermon Resources | 11 September 2022

Pastor Billy continues our Ephesians sermon series coming to Ephesians 5:5-8a where we will consider what the apostle Paul has to say concerning the certainty of God’s judgment. In the sermon we will consider how this central doctrine of our faith is vital to grasping the good news of Jesus.

Discussion Questions

  1. What most struck you from the sermon this week?
  2. Spend some time discussing the passage (Ephesians 5:5-8a). What do you find most sobering about this passage? What hope does this passage offer?
  3. How might you respond to a friend who asks you, “How can a loving God send good people to hell?”
  4. Do you think there is a specific reason Paul connects sexual sin with the certainty of God’s judgment? If so, why so? If not, why not?
  5. Which of the 4 points from the sermon is most relevant for you? How so? (1) Life is short. (2) Sin is serious. (3) God’s judgment is real. (4) Our redemption is complete.
  6. What is one thing you will do as a result of studying this passage?

For Further Discussion:

  1. Do you really believe that “life is short”? What might begin to change in your life if you lived as if you really believed it was?
  2. What keeps us from feeling the true weight of our sin? Is there a limit to how much we should dwell on the seriousness of our sin?
  3. Is it possible to share the gospel without talking about the certainty of God’s judgment? Why are we so hesitant to do so?
