Drawing Near to God and the Saints

Hebrews 10:19-25 | Sermon Resources | 18 September 2022

Summary

Pastor Dave will be preaching this Sunday. We’ll be taking a break from Ephesians, but continuing with our fall theme of Deeper in Community. You and I were not intended by God to journey through life alone. We can only fulfill the calling that God has on our lives as we grow deeper in community. The Bible challenges our independence and points us to the communion of saints. We approach a holy God by the blood of Jesus with a true heart in community. We draw near to God together with the saints, our brothers and sisters in God’s family. We’ll be looking at ways how (and how not) to draw near to God and our spiritual family.

Discussion Questions

  1. Have you been part of a small group that connected at more than a rational level? What was that like?
  2. Do you see the Old Testament as a story of God trying to draw near to His chosen people? Why or why not?
  3. What was the purpose of the 30 foot high veil in the tabernacle and later temple? (The first century Jewish historian Josephus records that Herod extended the temple’s height to 40 cubits high, about 60 feet tall, so the veil may have been even taller in Jesus’s day.)
  4. How have you tried to enter God’s holy presence that has not worked?
  5. What is keeping you from drawing near to God with a true heart? Are you aware of any protective strategies you use?
  6. Are you asking God to change your choices, thoughts, affections, and desires, or are you limiting God to certain parts of your heart?
  7. Have you ever had a friend who didn’t abandon you when your road darkened? What was that experience like?
  8. Have you given anyone in your life permission to stir you up to love and good deeds? Whom are you encouraging?
