Acts 1:1-8 | Sermon Resources | 21 November 2021
Sermon Summary
Pastor Billy concludes the Holy Spirit sermon series this week with a sermon on the Holy Spirit and Mission. We will consider Jesus’ words in Acts 1:8 where he sends his disciples out in the power of the Holy Spirit to be his witnesses.
Discussion Questions
- Because we have been given the Holy Spirit, we have certain privileges and responsibilities. What are some of those privileges? Responsibilities? What specific privileges and responsibilities do you see in our passage this week?
- What is the difference between being driven by guilt versus being driven by the Holy Spirit in seeking to be a witness for Jesus? What shift might need to take place in our lives so that we are not driven by guilt?
- How would you define the word “witness” in verse 8? What is the connection between our own first-hand relationship with Jesus and being a witness for him?
- Explain this statement: “Witness is an identity before it’s an activity.” In which of these two areas (identity or activity) do you most need to grow?
- What opportunities do you have or would you like to have to be a witness for Jesus?
- What does it mean to have the “power” of the Holy Spirit? Was this just something for the apostles? Do we continue to experience this power today? How so?
- Discuss the Acts 1:8 Challenge. Who are the 3 people you are praying for?
For the Family
- Memorize: Acts 1:8 – “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
- Read: John 9:1-33 and discuss the power and the simplicity of the testimony the blind man gave.
- Discuss: How is it going with the Acts 1:8 Challenge? Have you been able to pray for each person on your list every day this week?
