John 7:37-39 | Sermon Resources | 17 October 2021
Sermon Summary
Pastor Billy begins a new series this week on the doctrine of the Holy Spirit. In this introductory sermon we will explore Jesus’ invitation to come to him and drink so that we might have rivers of living water flowing from our hearts.
Discussion Questions
- Share a time when you were really thirsty. What was it like? What does physical thirst teach us about spiritual thirst?
- John tells us that this teaching from Jesus took place during the Feast of Booths (c.f. John 7:2). What is the significance of the Feast of Booths? What connection might there be between what Jesus has to say about living water and the Feast of Booths?
- What does Jesus’ teaching about rivers of living water teach us about the Holy Spirit?
- According to this passage how do you come to receive the Holy Spirit?
- What does it look like for us to come to Jesus and drink? Is this the same as coming to church? Why or why not?
- In what ways have you experienced the Holy Spirit in your life as a river of living water flowing from your heart?
- What steps might someone take to restore the flow of living water in their life?
For the Family
- Memorize: Zechariah 4:6 – Then he said to me, “This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel: Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the LORD of hosts.”
- Read: John 14:15-17 and discuss what it means to have the Holy Spirit as our “Helper.”
- Discuss: What can we do to more fully experience the Holy Spirit as streams of living water flowing from our hearts?
