Sermon Summary

In the sermon this week Pastor Billy explores Paul’s interaction with a group of “disciples” he encounters in Ephesus.  Paul asks just the right question that reveals where they really are spiritually.  Through this exchange we will see the importance of receiving the Holy Spirit.

Discussion Questions

  1. Why do you think Paul asks about whether or not they received Holy Spirit? Why is this a good starting point for understanding where they are spiritually?
  2. How would you respond to someone who believes that this passage teaches that not all Christians have the Holy Spirit?  That there is a second baptism of the Holy Spirit that you can receive after you’ve been a Christian for some time?
  3. What role does the Holy Spirit play in our lives? Not comprehensively, but practically speaking, what does the Holy Spirit do in our lives?
  4. What is the difference between knowing the fact of God’s love for us and experiencing God’s love? What is the danger of having one and not the other?  How can we grow in the experience of God’s love?
  5. How can someone know whether or not they have the Holy Spirit?
  6. What other questions did this passage raise for you? Spend some discussing them.
