God’s Grace in Action (Part 2)

Acts 16:16-40    |   Sermon Resources   |    7 February 2021

Summary

Pastor Billy continues with Part 2 of the sermon begun last week — God’s Grace in Action.  This week we examine the lives of a demon-possessed slave girl and a suicidal prison warden to see how far down the grace of God reaches.

Discussion Questions

  1. What do we learn about the slave girl in this passage? What do you think it would have been like to have been in her position?
  2. Luke tells us she has a “spirit of divination” which appears to be something demonic. Do you believe demons exist today? Why or why not? What is the danger of too much attention on the demonic? What is the danger of ignoring the topic altogether?
  3. Paul and Silas were singing and praying while in prison. What might this teach us about them even in the midst of false accusations and imprisonment?
  4. What do we learn about the prison warden in this passage? What do you think it would have been like to have been in his position?
  5. Why is it so difficult for us to believe Paul’s words in v. 31 that all that is necessary for salvation is belief?
  6. What does this passage teach us about how far down the grace of God reaches? What areas in your life do you most need God’s grace right now?
  7. What reasons do you think Paul had for not leaving the prison after the magistrates allowed them to go free (v.35+)?
