#9 Do Not Bear False Witness

Exodus 20:16    |    Sermon Resources   |    15 November 2020

Sermon Summary

In the sermon this week Pastor Billy addresses the 9th commandment to not bear false witness.  We will see that this commandment is about not just telling the truth but not using the “truth” in misleading or deceptive way.

Listen for the following ideas in the sermon this week:

  • Love as the summary of the law
  • Pontius Pilate’s question to Jesus, “What is truth?”
  • Relativism and “speaking your truth”
  • 3 categories of bearing false witness
    • Speaking what is false – white lies, lies of convenience, exaggeration
    • Speaking what is true in a misleading way – politicians, the media, and us!
    • Speaking what is true in a malicious way – Ephesians 4:15
  • Jeremiahs 17:9-10
  • 3 reasons why we bear false witness
    • It is easy.
    • We are afraid of being exposed. John 3:16-19
    • We don’t trust God.
  • Exodus 20:2

Discussion Questions

  1. What are some ways the world defines “truth”?  How should we define truth?
  2. Is it ever okay to lie?  Why or why not?
  3. What are some ways we fail to keep the 9th commandment?
  4. Why do people lie?  Spend some time discussing the heart issues behind the sin.
  5. Read Ephesians 4:15.  What does Paul mean when he calls us to speak the truth in love?  What would change in your life and in our community if we really obeyed this command?
