#7 Do Not Commit Adultery

Exodus 20:14     |    Sermon Resources     |     1 November 2020

Sermon Summary

In the sermon this week Pastor Billy addresses the seventh commandment to not commit adultery.  We live in a sex-crazed culture with plenty of evidence of sexual brokenness in the world — and in the church.  Pastor Billy makes the case that what is needed is both a sense of conviction of our sin and a conviction that in Christ holiness is possible even in this area.

Listen for the following ideas in the sermon this week:

  • The difference between the law of God and the Spirit of God
  • Train illustration
  • Holiness is possible even in regard to the 7th commandment
  • How sex and fire are alike
  • Pornography statistics
    • 12% of all Internet sites are pornographic
    • 25% of all online search engine requests are related to sex (~ 68 million requests per day)
    • The average age of first exposure to Internet porn is 11
    • One-third of all Internet porn users are women
  • 1 Thessalonians 5:14
  • 4 attitudes toward the 7th commandment: confused, calloused, crushed, convicted
  • Romans 12:2
  • Illustration from the life of Dietrich Bonhoeffer
  • Matthew 5:27-30
  • Galatians 6:7-8
  • Web filtering at home
  • Romans 8:1-2
  • 1 Corinthians 10:12-13

Discussion Questions

NOTE FOR THE GROUP LEADER: If you are using these questions in your Life Group, consider splitting the group into men and women and be sure to save time to pray for one another.

  1. In what way is the gift of sex like the gift of fire?
  2. Why do you think it is difficult to be honest with others in this area of sexual purity?
  3. How can we develop and more open community where we can more freely talk about important struggles like this?
  4. Read Matthew 5:27-30. How does Jesus deepen our understanding of what the 7th commandment is about?
  5. Does Jesus really mean for us to pluck out our eyes and cut off our hands? If not, what does he mean?  What would obedience to Jesus’ words look like for us?
  6. Why is it hard to really believe that holiness is possible in regard to sexual purity?
  7. In the sermon Pastor Billy discussed 4 attitudes towards the 7th commandment:
    • Confused
    • Calloused
    • Crushed
    • Convicted

Spend some time discussing each attitude.  What Scripture would you use to address each attitude?  Where would you place yourself?
