#2 How We Worship Matters

Exodus 20:4-6     |    Sermon Resources    |   27 September 2020

From Pastor Billy

We come this week to the 2nd commandment — to not worship idols.  There are 2 basic ways we can commit idolatry: (1) we worship a false god (i.e. an idol) or (2) we worship the true God in a false way.  I think we are most familiar with first form of idolatry but perhaps not as much with the second and so this second form of idolatry will be the focus for the sermon.

Listen for the following ideas in this week’s sermon:

  • Reminder that the law is picture of our true selves
  • 2 ways we break the 2nd commandment
  • Difference between the 1st commandment and the 2nd commandment
  • Worshiping God by our imagination vs. revelation
  • Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego
  • Exodus 32:5 “tomorrow will be a feast to the LORD”
  • Quote from John Calvin: “In brief, if all the pieces that could be found were collected together, they would make a big ship-load. Yet the Gospel testifies that a single man was able to carry it.”
  • Deuteronomy 4:15 “Therefore watch yourselves very carefully. Since you saw no form on the day that the LORD spoke to you at Horeb out of the midst of the fire”
  • Colossians 1:15 “He is the image of the invisible God.”
  • Another quote (!) from John Calvin “the sacraments, therefore, are exercises which make us more certain of the trustworthiness of God’s Word”
