Sermon Discussion Questions

Jeremiah 33:10-16

GOD KEEPS HIS PROMISES

  1. Share what you know about the context of this passage. Who wrote it? When was it written? What was going on in Jerusalem at the time?
  2. As you read verse 10 what is the perspective of the people regarding their current situation? [What does the LORD say that people have said?]
  3. Does the LORD rebuke the people on their perspective or does he affirm that what they have said is correct?
  4. How does hope allow us to deal honestly with the difficulties we face?
  5. What promises does the LORD make in his passage concerning the restoration of Jerusalem and the surrounding land? Do you see any ways they are applicable to us today?
  6. Why might these promises have been difficult for the people to believe at that time?
  7. Why is it important that our hope be grounded in God’s promises and not our own wishful thinking?
  8. In verses 10 to 12 the LORD shares a vision for what he will accomplish and in verses 14 to 16 he shares how he will accomplish it. What do we learn about how God will fulfill his promises?
  9. What is the significance of the coming Messiah being referred to as a Branch of David? What are we supposed to learn from this image? (If you have time, here are some other verses that use the image of a Branch to depict the coming Messiah: Jeremiah 23:5 Isaiah 4:2, 11:1, Zechariah 3:8, 6:12.)
  10. Share any ways this passage could stir hope within you.
