John 13:1-17    |     Sermon Resources      9 May 2021

Sermon Summary

Pastor Billy finishes the Transformed series this week with the last part of our vision statement “who sacrificially love others.”  We will look at Jesus’ washing of the disciples’ feet in John 13 and consider Jesus’ heart for his people and the example he left for us.

Discussion Questions

  1. What does it say about Jesus that he washed not only his disciples feet but Judas’ feet as well?
  2. Would you struggle more to be in Jesus’ position to have to wash the disciples’ feet or in Peter’s position to have your feet washed? How so?
  3. What does Jesus mean when he tells Peter “If I do not wash you, you have no share with me”? Why are we sometimes unwilling to allow Jesus to “wash” us?
  4. What about Jesus’ model of how to love others, feels impossible to you? How so?
  5. Read verses 3-4. In what way did Jesus’ validation from the Father free him to serve the disciples?
  6. Why is it important for us to first be rooted and grounded (validated) in the Father’s love for us, before we can truly love others?
  7. What does this passage reveal about Jesus’ heart? In what ways do you struggle to really believe that Jesus’ heart is for you?
  8. What next step might God be calling you to take to become a more loving person?
